This document is entitled “Hollywood vs Hollywood”, therefore we can wonder if there is a competition between the two film industries. It compares Hollywood with Bollywood.
In terms of influence, Hollywood movies are famous all over the world, whereas Bollywood movies are only released in India.
Indeed, Bollywood movies don’t have the same export value as Bollywood movies.
They only reach a national audience whereas Hollywood movies reach a global audience.
But India is much more populated than the USA, so its audience is huge.
In terms of production, Bollywood produces as many movies as Hollywood.
Bollywood movies are sometimes called “Masala Movies”, because, like the Indian dish, it is made with traditional elements and a mix of cultures.
It is also very spicy: it contains a lot of drama and a lot of action.
The plots usually revolve around:
romance (star crossed lovers),
implausible coincidences
and reversals of fortune.
There are always song and-dance sequences.
The name “Bollywood” is a conflation of the former name of Mumbai: Bombay and the name Hollywood. It is a portmanteau.
So Bollywood refers to the film industry based in Mumbai, and to movies in Hindi (which is the official language along with English).
But there is a variety of other Indian film industries, just like other languages.
